Located in the vibrant heart of Oakland’s bustling Telegraph Avenue, the White Horse Inn stands out as a beloved local gem in the bar scene, especially cherished within the LGBTQ+ community. This dynamic establishment effortlessly blends the inviting spirit of a queer bar with the electric charm of a cocktail lounge, creating a space that feels both like a comfortable haven and an exciting hub for nightlife.
Step inside, and you're immediately welcomed by a uniquely eclectic atmosphere that combines elements of dive bar grit with thoughtful contemporary updates. The recent renovations and new management have added a fresh vibrancy to the space, complete with a lively DJ booth that keeps a steady pulse of energy across the dance floor. Whether you're looking to unwind with a carefully crafted cocktail or get lost in some dance-worthy beats, the White Horse Inn masterfully caters to every mood.
One of the standout highlights on their menu is the perfectly crispy Brussels Sprouts, a crunchy, savory delight that pairs wonderfully with their famously robust Bloody Mary – a drink lauded for its bold flavors and the ideal kickstart to any night or brunch infusion. These offerings hint at a thoughtful approach to bar bites and cocktails, elevating the experience beyond the usual.
What truly sets White Horse Inn apart, however, is the community it fosters. Reviewers consistently celebrate the friendly and welcoming vibe, making it a go-to spot for both newcomers and longtime locals alike. From Melissa Leal’s endorsement of the warm and open atmosphere during Sunday pool tournaments to Nicole Hartman’s praise of the inclusive crowd and energized dance floor, there’s a genuine spirit of connection and acceptance here.
Longtime patrons appreciate its spacious interior that holds potential for a range of engaging events, as noted by Cee Rose, who describes it as a “perfect little haven” with a staff that makes every visit memorable. The mix of a DJ booth, dance floor, photo booth, and pool table — as Armand Muntzel points out — means there’s always something to enjoy, no matter your preferred mode of entertainment.
Despite minor hiccups one guest experienced, the overwhelming consensus is clear: White Horse Inn is a cornerstone of East Bay’s nightlife, a place that balances celebration with genuine community care. Whether you’re navigating new social circles or just craving a night out enveloped in spirited inclusivity, this sipping and dancing sanctuary offers a uniquely affirming and fun experience.
For anyone seeking an authentic queer bar with character, strong cocktails, and an atmosphere brimming with welcoming energy, the White Horse Inn is an essential stop along Oakland's Telegraph Avenue.
Went on a Sunday. Solid queer bar, decent bar service, pool tournament was happening and very friendly patrons. Highly recommend, especially if you’re new in town.
First time back since the renovation / new mgmt. Looks great! DJ kept the dance floor energy hyped. Good mix in the crowd as always. Friendly place, welcoming grateful to have spaces like these in East Bay.
My wife and I finally made it to this spot. The drinks were great, the music was okay... but dance worthy. The crowd was okay too. However, it is located in Berkeley, so it is understandable for the crowd type. We sat at the bar major of the night, but danced around our seating area. People were friendly and welcoming. Had a slight issue whey the bartender and what I noticed he was doing for some, but not others. However, he and I spoke and he rectified the issue. Hopefully, we won't have any issues moving forward in the area of the issue that I brought forth. Other than that, we will go back again. Maybe on a Saturday to see if it is a diffrent vibe,
My friend has been trying to drag me here for weeks so I finally caved and we went. Not a big fan of this location but once inside, its a perfect little haven with good drinks and great staff. There's a big space inside and it looks like there's potentially for a lot of cool things to go down in here. If dark and divey is your jam, head on over!
Great local bar with a DJ both, dance floor, Photo Booth, and pool table
